What you can check safely: With the door closed and the opener disconnected, inspect the cables for fraying and the drums for cracks or groove wear. Look for cable slack on one side. These are visual checks that tell you what’s coming.

Where DIY goes wrong: Replacing a cable on a torsion spring door requires releasing and resetting spring tension. The stored energy in a standard 16-foot door spring is enough to cause serious injury or worse.
